Laboratory-Based Oral Fluids Testing

Oral fluid testing offers many advantages for drug testing when the possibility of recent drug usage needs to be determined. Oral fluid samples are easy to collect and are non-intrusive. This type of testing is exceptional for critical situations, such as on-site collecting when a lavatory is unavailable or when urine specimen adulteration or substitution is suspected. Test results are typically available within 24 to 48 hours.

Drug Testing Panels

Oral fluids drug testing detects the SAMHSA-5 drug panel, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, and amphetamines/methamphetamines including Ecstacy and PCP. These are the most commonly tested drugs of abuse in the workplace. Additional drug tests include oxycodone, barbiturates, methadone, benzodiazepines, K2/Spice, and bath salts.

Methodology

Oral fluid samples are first screened in the laboratory using a proven and reliable technology called enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Any sample that screens “positive” is then subject to liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). This is the latest technology available.
